Why has the grinder in a fully automatic coffee machine to be cleaned?

Milk systems in coffee machines have to be cleaned daily and water circulations have to be decalcified regularly. Only the grinder in the machines is cleaned seldom or never. But a professional cleaning of the grinder brings not only hygienically advantages.

Not only for the coffee quality …
With the use of the grinder especially oil residues of the coffee beans will stick to the inner of the grinder casing. These oil residues will get rancid. That means that with every new shot some of the old oil residues will be transported into the new grind. Residues in the grinder casing make a constant bean- and ground coffee flow difficult. The amount of ground coffee varies. Oil residues on the grinding discs influence the quality and performance of the grind. Therefore, a regular cleaning of the grinder not only improves the coffee quality, but the life cycle of the grinding discs as well.

Case Study
The cleaning with a brush has happened in the past. With the adequate grinder cleaner the grinder can be cleaned directly in the shop / restaurant without the need of opening it. We analysed the effect of cleaning with GRINDZ at different grind settings.

GRINDZ is foreseen for dry use. The cleaner is not meant to get in contact with the brewing unit, because the residues in combination with water could block the sieves. For this reason the grinder should have the possibility to grind directly into the grounds bin or a bypass around the brewing unit should be installed. Another solution is that the service technician collects the used grinder cleaner during his regular service.
